Eric Karle Collage

For this project we were assigned to create a layout for a storybook that was based on the artwork by Eric Karle, and artist who did alot with collages.

The first step in this project was to decided a story line, and for mine I chose to use a butterfly because I thought it would be really fun to pull different colors to make up the butterfly.  Next we got to paint random colors with added textures to multiple sheets of 12"x18" constructions papers, and from that we cut out our objects for our collage.  The last step was putting it all together, and pasting on the scenery, sky, and object but also adding some text because this needed to be like a page from a story book.

A fun extension for this project would be to incorporate it into a science class room.  You could have your students complete four sheets to show the different stages a butterfly goes through from start to finish.  It would be a fun way for the students to incorporate an artist into their science curriculum  but also would really help them grasp the different stages by making a collage inspired by Eric Karle.
